Calculate IFTA from ELD miles and fuel purchases
How freightline builds your quarterly IFTA worksheet from ELD or routed load miles and imported fuel purchases, and how to export it to CSV before filing.
IFTA needs two numbers per state: miles driven and gallons bought. freightline puts both together on the IFTA report page and works out taxable gallons, tax due, credits and the net for each state.
Where the miles come from
- Swift ELD: miles by state come straight from the ELD’s GPS for every truck that is linked to a truck in freightline.
- Other ELDs or no ELD: miles come from Google routes of your delivered loads, loaded plus deadhead.
Steps
- Connect your ELD in Settings → ELD (see Connect your ELD). Keep each truck’s VIN and unit number filled in so the ELD units match your trucks.
- Get your diesel purchases in: fuel card CSV, an uploaded fuel report, forwarded fuel emails (see Import fuel receipts by email) or Add fuel entry by hand. Each purchase needs a state to earn a tax-paid credit.
- Open Fuel & IFTA and click IFTA quarterly report. The page opens on the quarter that is due next; pick another quarter from the row above the totals.
- If miles come from loads, press Calculate state miles to route any delivered loads that don’t have state miles yet. Loads Google can’t route get a straight-line estimate, and the page tells you how many.
- Read the yellow warnings box, then the By jurisdiction table: miles, taxable gallons, gallons bought, rate, tax due, credit and net for each state. States with their own weight-distance tax are listed separately below it.
- Press CSV to download the worksheet with every state, the totals, the fleet MPG, the rate quarter used and where the miles came from.
An estimate to file from, not a filed return
freightline does not file your IFTA return. The report is a worksheet: check it against your fuel card and ELD reports, then file with your base jurisdiction. If the selected quarter’s rates aren’t loaded yet, the closest quarter is used and the page and CSV say so — verify every rate before you file.
