What IFTA is
The International Fuel Tax Agreement lets a carrier running qualified motor vehicles in more than one jurisdiction file a single fuel tax return with its base state. Each quarter you report miles driven and gallons bought in every state. The return works out the tax owed on fuel burned in each state, subtracts the tax you already paid at the pump there, and your base state settles the difference with the others.
Rates can change every quarter, so use the table for the quarter you are filing. Returns are due on the last day of the month after the quarter ends:
- Q1 (January–March): April 30
- Q2 (April–June): July 31
- Q3 (July–September): October 31
- Q4 (October–December): January 31 of the next year
If a due date falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the return is due the next business day. Exact dates and the next deadline are on the IFTA due dates page.
