How driver settlements work
A settlement starts from the loads the driver hauled in the pay period. Each load earns the driver pay by the pay type in their agreement, then additions and reimbursements are added and deductions taken off.
- Percentage of the load rate: the driver gets a share (often 25–30% for company drivers) of each load’s linehaul rate. Pay follows the rate, so a well-paying short load pays more than a cheap long one.
- Per mile (CPM): loaded miles × the rate per mile. Some carriers pay all miles, loaded plus empty (deadhead), at the same rate; others pay loaded miles only.
- Flat per load: a fixed amount for each load, common on dedicated or local runs.
What to deduct
Only what the signed pay agreement lists: fuel and cash advances already paid to the driver, and agreed items such as occupational accident insurance, ELD fees or escrow. Advances are not extra charges; they are money the driver already received during the week.
Lumper fees and reimbursements
When the driver pays a lumper, a scale ticket or a toll out of pocket, pay it back in full as a reimbursement. Keep it out of the rate the driver’s percentage is figured on, even if the broker adds it to the rate confirmation; otherwise the driver gets only a share of their own money back.

Frequently asked questions
Is the settlement generator really free? Do I need an account?
Yes, it is free and there is no sign-up. Fill in the loads, then download the PDF or print it.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and the PDF is built on your device. Nothing you type is uploaded or saved on our servers, and it is gone when you close the page.
What is a driver settlement?
A driver settlement (or trip settlement) is the pay statement a trucking company gives a driver for a pay period. It lists the loads, how the pay was worked out, any additions and reimbursements, the deductions, and the net amount paid.
Should lumper fees be included in the driver's percentage?
Usually not. A lumper fee the driver paid out of pocket is a reimbursement: it is paid back in full and kept out of the load rate the driver's percentage is figured on. Enter it in the Lumper / reimbursement field of the load.
Does this calculate taxes?
No. It does not work out income or payroll tax withholding. Owner-operators and 1099 drivers usually get settlements without withholding; for W-2 company drivers use your payroll provider for taxes.
How is the pay rounded?
Driver pay is rounded to the cent for each load (half a cent rounds up) and the loads are then added up, so the lines on the pay stub always add up to the total. All math is done in whole cents, with no floating-point rounding errors.
