How it is calculated
- Per mile, loaded miles: loaded miles × rate + deadhead miles × deadhead rate.
- Per mile, all miles: (loaded + deadhead miles) × rate.
- Percentage: gross revenue × percent.
- Gross pay = base pay + extra stops × pay per stop + detention hours × hourly rate.
- Net pay = gross pay − escrow − insurance − ELD − other deductions.
- Effective pay per mile = gross pay ÷ (loaded + deadhead miles).
- Share of revenue = gross pay ÷ gross revenue.

Frequently asked questions
How is truck driver pay per mile calculated?
Gross pay is paid miles × the rate per mile, plus any extra-stop or detention pay. If only loaded miles are paid, the driver's effective pay across all miles driven is lower; this calculator shows it as gross pay ÷ (loaded + deadhead miles).
How does percentage pay work for truck drivers?
The driver gets a set percentage of the gross revenue of the loads they haul. Pay follows the rates rather than the miles, so a well-paying short load pays more than a cheap long one.
How do I compare per-mile pay with percentage pay?
Enter the same week under both pay types. The "driver pay as % of revenue" and "effective pay per mile" results put both on the same scale, so you can see which pays more for that kind of freight.
Which deductions come out of driver pay?
Only what the pay agreement lists, for example escrow, insurance or ELD fees. This calculator does not work out income or payroll taxes.
